The Qashqai music and Gorginpour family 2
The Gorginpours:
Father: Habib Khan Gorginpour
Habib Khan was born in a Qashqai tribe in 1924. He began playing the setār (an Iranian instrument) in his childhood and guarded Qashqai original songs for seventy years until he left the legacy for his children and other Qashqai musicians. His disciples were his children, Dr. Foroud Gorginpour and Dr. Farhad Gorginpour, who learned music directly from him. And thousands of musicians and singers learned his style indirectly. Throughout his fruitful life, Habib Khan met such great Iranian musicians as Mohammad Hussein Kiani, Tahmores Khan Kashkoli, and Ostad Ganji and collaborated with them to create masterpieces.
Habib Khan died in the fall of 2007.
The First Son: Foroud Gorginpour
The oldest child of Habib Khan Gorginpour was born in 1945. His mother is Mohammad Bahman Beigi’s sister. His parents encouraged him to learn music from early age, so he started with the violin and moved to Tehran with his family to develop his musical skills. In addition, he could complete his elementary school and high school each in two years.
He graduated from the University of Shiraz in Persian Literature and Literature in 1973. In 1975, he became acquainted with the great professors of Persian music on his entrance to the Faculty of Fine Arts at Tehran University. He graduated in music in 1979 and won the first rank in solo several times at national music festivals in the following years.
For forty years, Foroud Gorginpour suffered much to maintain and enrich the Qashqai authentic musical culture, while unfortunately he has remained unknown.
Dr. Gorginpour is no more able to play the violin due to old age.
The Second Son: Farhad Gorginpour
Farhad Gorginpour was born in 1948 in Shiraz. He began his university studies in Persian Language and Literature in 1348. After receiving his bachelor’s degree, he started teaching in Tehran. During the following years, he published several articles and books on Qashqai literature and culture.
Farhad Gorginpour was very skillful in playing the accordion, making the instrument in Qashqai music so popular that the accordion is now a very important instrument in Qashqai music.
Dr. Gorginpour lived in many cities throughout his life. Although he was blind in his last years, he created great pieces of Qashqai music.
He died at the age of 70 after many years of fighting cancer at Namazi hospital in Shiraz in 2018.
Habib Khan Gorginpour’s younger sons include Allāh Qoli, Mustafā Kamāl, and Gholāmali, each having his own special skill in Qashqai music.
